We are an organisation driven by our people, people who want to build something we can be proud of. We’ve come a long way and together we’re going places. Our people are an extension of our values, so you’ll find nothing less than a truly committed, passionate, smart and entrepreneurial team here.
As a father of two and Director of Outdoor Education for a large independent school, Wal led his first expedition in 2006. Enchanted with the World Challenge way of learning he then went on to become a Schools Manager, Regional Manager and Director of Operations. As General Manager (Australasia) Wal now heads up the Australian family from Melbourne.
Billy loves leading a life less ordinary. She has spent the last 17 summers working and living in Antarctica as a field guide and survival trainer. Over the last 20 years, Billy has worked as an outdoor educator and to date she has helped lead trips to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Peru and Bolivia with India and Sri Lanka to come.
Setting the tone from the top, adventure runs in Pete’s blood, so does family and so does Australia. Pete helped establish World Challenge in Australia over ten years ago and after taking time out to complete an unassisted row across the North Atlantic in 2015, Pete has been steering our ship.
Rusty is like a good cup of coffee – oodles of froth on top belying an enviable strength and flavour. With these traits derived from a commitment to self-improvement and a burning desire to live life to the full, Rusty epitomises much of what students’ gain from a World Challenge.
After an early career with us in Australia, we’re proud to have Aaron back. A decade of valuable experience has seen him retrain as a teacher, become an assistant principal in the USA and a global consultant on risk, environmental and sustainability challenges for big corporates. Lucky for us, he’s come back to his roots.
Mikaela is an outdoor educator, traveller and eco warrior! When she was at school, she travelled as a student on a World Challenge expedition to Thailand and Cambodia. Since then, she has gone on to work in the outdoors and the mental health sector, leads expeditions for us has and travelled hard.

Our expedition leaders
We recruit, train and retain people who have a passion for youth development, ethical travel and cultural immersion. Our leaders seek out challenge, know the risks, find the fun. They’re the first to engage but the last to speak. They’re confident, competent and ready for the journey.
Teachers and the team will have the opportunity to get to know their leader during their training to ensure they are a good match. They are always there to actively step in on matters of safety and to avoid budgeting catastrophes but moreover, they’re role models.
We believe it takes a team to lead a group so we place one of our professional Expedition Leaders with every team, as well as fully funding at least one pastoral School Leader from the school. This gives our approach to leadership both balance and strength.
