Who we are
Proud of our people
Get in touchWe were born in a rural village in the distant snow-capped mountains of Pakistan. Back in 1985 a young army captain took a team of soldiers overseas on a training mission in the remote Hindu Kush range. It wasn’t long before he realized that the personal development and camaraderie learned there would shape them all for years to come. He brought the blueprint back and World Challenge was born, founding the schools expedition industry.
Whether it’s about finding perspective, overcoming obstacles or gaining confidence, World Challenge builds the life skills young people need to live a life of courage, kindness and adventure. Today we are 30 years young, proudly travelling to over 40 destinations with over 8,000 students every year.
We’re not shy in saying we lead the way in safety, quality, ethical community engagement and learning outcomes. We believe in the value of what we do, it’s why we’re still here, it’s why we plan on sticking around a whole lot longer.
We are a business driven by our people and want to build something we can be proud of. We’ve come a long way and together we’re going places. Our people are an extension of our values, so you’ll find nothing less than a truly committed, passionate, smart and entrepreneurial team here.
Setting the tone from the top, adventure runs in Pete’s blood, so does family and so does Australia. Pete helped establish World Challenge in Australia over ten years ago and after taking time out to complete an unassisted row across the North Atlantic in 2015, Pete has been steering our ship.
Rusty is like a good cup of coffee – oodles of froth on top belying an enviable strength and flavour. With these traits derived from a commitment to self-improvement and a burning desire to live life to the full, Rusty epitomises much of what students’ gain from a World Challenge.
After an early career with us in Australia, we’re proud to have Aaron back. A decade of valuable experience has seen him retrain as a teacher, become an assistant principal in the USA and a global consultant on risk, environmental and sustainability challenges for big corporates. Lucky for us, he’s come back to his roots.
As a father of two and Director of Outdoor Education for a large independent school, Wal led his first expedition in 2006. Enchanted with the World Challenge way of learning he then went on to become a Schools Manager, Regional Manager and Director of Operations. As General Manager (Australasia) Wal now heads up the Australian family from Melbourne.
Jodie hasn’t just visited our destinations, she’s cycled through nearly all of them on the back of her bike. Her stories from the road are enough to make anyone put their hand up for a World Challenge (minus the bike). Go on, try her! At the very least join one of her early morning yoga classes.
